Surgical Treatment of Pectus Excavatum



Abstract
Pectus excavatum is a congenital anomaly of the chest wall with a concave depression of the sternum, from above downward and from side to side. We have experienced 67 cases of pectus excavatum with several operative procedures such as. Ravitch operation in 22 cases and Wada operation in 11 cases at Yonsei University College of Medicine over 10 year pe-iod from January 1979 to December 1989. One 21 year old male had very severe pectus excavatum accompanying with severe scoliosis and was treated with a modified Ravitch operation such as Robiscek procedure and also have been treated with Milk-Walk brace in the follow-up periods. There were 3 cases of pneumothorax, one case of pleural effusion, 2 cases of wound infection and one case of seroma as post-operative complications. These patients were accompanied with 2 cases of VSD and one case of ASD as congenital cardiac anomalies 2 cases of lung cyst and one case of main bronchial stenosis as congenital tracheobronc_zial anomalies, one club hand, one bilateral cryptochism, one case of multiple deformities and me case of microcephalus with hearing loss. There were no operative deaths.
